Rapport F/Lt Cottrell: - ( We took off from LISSETT at 2300 hrs on 2 Jun 44 in a Halifax aircraft in a bombing mission to TRAPPES. On our way home we were hit by flak in the fuselage. The starboard inner engine and the bomb bay caught fire. As the rear hatch was jammed I baled out through the Flak holes. I landed early on 3 Jun 44 in a cornfield at AVIRON (N.W. EUROPE 1:250,000, Sheet 7, R 1773). I buried my parachute and harness in the field. I walked to HONDONVILLE (R 1781). A man came up to me and asked if I was English. I was then taken to a house in the village where I was given food and clothes and I stayed there until 6 Jun. I was taken to a chateau in HOUETTEVILLE (R 1680) and was given food and shelter until 11 Jul 44. While I was there an Englishman (name unknown) advised me to leave, as the S.S. men were snooping around and wanted to take over the chateau for a H.Q.. The Englishman contacted a friend who took me to his house in HONDONVILLE. I was given a civilian identity card. On 23 Aug F/Lt. THORN (S/P.G (-) 2153) who was also sheltered at this house went to the American H.Q. in the town. We were picked up and passed over to the 1st Army who evacuated us to Bayeux.Original) - (WO 208/3321/2204 - source : Nat Arch UK - Traduction Ph Laroyenne): Nous avons décollé de Lissett à 23h00 le 2 juin 1944 à bord d'un Halifax pour une mission de bombardement sur Trappes [78]. Sur le chemin du retour, nous avons été touchés par la DCA au niveau du fuselage. Le moteur intérieur tribord et la soute à bombes ont pris feu. La trappe arrière étant bloquée, je me suis éjecté par les trous de Flak. J'ai atterri tôt le 3 juin 1944 dans un champ de maïs à Aviron (N-O Europe, 1/250 000, feuille 7, ZNG vR1773). J'ai enterré mon parachute et mon harnais dans le champ. J'ai marché jusqu'à Hondouville (vR1781). Un homme s'est approché de moi et m'a demandé si j'étais anglais. J'ai ensuite été conduit dans une maison du village où l'on m'a donné à manger et des vêtements. J'y suis resté jusqu'au 6 juin. J'ai ensuite été emmené dans un château à Houetteville (vR1780) où j'ai été nourri et logé jusqu'au 11 juillet 1944. Pendant mon séjour, un Anglais (dont j'ignore le nom) m'a conseillé de partir, car des SS rôdaient et voulaient s'emparer du château pour y installer leur quartier général. Cet Anglais a contacté un ami qui m'a accueilli chez lui à Hondouville. On m'a remis une carte d'identité civile. Le 23 août, le F/Lt Thorn (S/P.G(-)2153), également hébergé dans cette maison, s'est rendu au quartier général américain de la ville. Nous avons été pris en charge et remis à la 1re armée qui nous a évacués vers Bayeux. |
