Rapport F/Lt Mason: - ( We took off from MILDENALL at 2200 hrs on 27 Jul 44 in a Lancaster aircraft on a bombing mission to STUTGART. On the way to the target at 0030 hrs on 28 Jul an explosion occurred in the aircraft. The pilot said "Parachutes". I acknowledged this, but I did not hear anyone else do so. I got out of my turret. The aircraft was in a very steep dive. I called the pilot on the inter-com, but got no reply. We were at approximately 3,000 feet when I baled out. I landed in a field about one km. North of MONTERESSON (FRANCE, 1:250,000, Sheet 16, G 3525) at approximately 0045 hrs on 28 Jul. I hid my parachute, harness and mae west in a clump of bushes. I walked North about four kms. and stayed in a wood until 0500 hrs, when I hid my flying suit in a bush and walked S.W. skirting MONTERESSON. At 0800 hrs I spoke to a French boy and asked where the nearest Germans were located. He indicated that they were at MONTARGIS (X 2745). I walked N.W. across the fields. About an hour later I spoke to a farmer, who took me to his home and gave me a meal. After about an hour I continued walking N.W. across country. About noon a Frenchman who had been cycling along a side road stopped and approached me. He took me to his home and gave me a meal. His son later took me across some fields and indicated the direction in which I should travel in order to contact the Maquis. At 1600 hrs I came to the outskirts of PESSIGNY (G 3120). I hid in a small wood until 2000 hrs, when I went into the village and hid in the church, where I remained for about half an hour. I then went to a field where a man was working. I spoke to him and asked for help. En route vers la cible, à 0 h 30 le 28 juillet, une explosion s'est produite à bord. Le pilote a crié « Parachutes ! ». J'ai acquiescé, mais je n'ai entendu personne d'autre le faire. Je suis sorti de ma tourelle. L'avion piquait très brusquement. J'ai tenté de joindre le pilote par l'interphone, mais il n'a pas répondu. Nous étions à environ 900 mètres d'altitude lorsque j'ai sauté en parachute. J'ai ensuite marché environ quatre kilomètres vers le nord. Je suis resté dans un bois jusqu'à 5 h, heure à laquelle j’ai caché ma combinaison de vol dans un buisson et marché vers le sud-ouest en longeant Montcresson. À 8 h, j’ai parlé à un jeune Français et lui ai demandé où se trouvaient les Allemands les plus proches. Il m'a indiqué qu'ils étaient à Montargis (F16, ZNG vX2745). J’ai marché vers le nord-ouest à travers champs. Environ une heure plus tard, j’ai rencontré un fermier qui m'accueillit chez lui et me donna à manger. Une heure plus tard, j’ai repris ma marche vers le nord-ouest à travers la campagne. Vers midi, un Français qui circulait à vélo sur un chemin de traverse s'arrêta et s'approcha de moi. Il m'accueillit chez lui et me donna à manger. Son fils me conduisit ensuite à travers champs et m'indiqua la direction à suivre pour contacter le maquis. À 16 h, j'arrivai aux abords de Pessigny[-les-Pins] (F16 FL2 wG3120). Je me suis caché dans un petit bois jusqu'à 20 h, puis je suis entré dans le village et me suis réfugié dans l'église, où je suis resté une demi-heure environ. Je suis ensuite allé dans un champ où un homme travaillait. Je lui ai parlé et lui ai demandé de l'aide. Le reste de mon voyage a été organisé pour moi. Rapport F/Lt Mason: - ( APPENDIX C - The man whom I contacted in a field in the outskirts of PESSIGNY (FRANCE, 1:250,000, Sheet 16, G 3120) went to the local schoolmaster and they returned to the field together a few minutes later. The schoolmaster asked me a few questions and then took me to a house in the village, where I was put into an outhouse and given a meal. The schoolmaster went away and returned with an elderly Frenchman who said that I could sleep in one of his barns. I went to this barn, where I remained until 2330 hrs, when three Frenchmen arrived and asked me some questions. They then went away and I remained in the barn until 29 Jul, when the schoolmaster took me to his home in PESSIGNY. He gave me civilian clothes. A little later the elderly man of the previous afternoon returned, accompanied by his wife and two daughters. They had cycles and had brought one for me. I went with this party and we were accompanied by the schoolmaster and his wife. We cycled to a hamlet North of NOGENT (G 3017) where I stayed at a house until 31 Jul, when the elderly man and the schoolmaster came to the house and escorted me to the Château Ouchamps near THIMORY (G 2028). We travelled on bicycles. I met F/O WALTON at the Château Ouchamps. The remainder of my experiences are as related by him in his report (S/P.G(-)2157).Original) - ( PARTIE II): APPENDIX C - L'homme que j'ai rencontré dans un champ aux abords de Pessigny (Feuille 16, FL2 wG3120) est allé voir l'instituteur du village et ils sont retournés ensemble au champ quelques minutes plus tard. L'instituteur m'a posé quelques questions, puis m'a emmené dans une maison du village, où on m'a installé dans des toilettes extérieures et donné à manger. L'instituteur est reparti et est revenu avec un vieil homme français qui m'a dit que je pouvais dormir dans une de ses granges. Je me suis rendu dans cette grange, où je suis resté jusqu'à 23 h 30, heure à laquelle trois Français sont arrivés et m'ont posé quelques questions. Ils sont ensuite repartis et je suis resté dans la grange jusqu'au 29 juillet, date à laquelle l'instituteur m'a emmené chez lui à Pessigny. Il m'a donné des vêtements civils. Un peu plus tard, le vieil homme de la veille est revenu, accompagné de sa femme et de ses deux filles. Ils avaient des vélos et m'en avaient apporté un. J'ai fait partie de ce groupe, accompagné du maître d'école et de sa femme. Nous avons pédalé jusqu'à un hameau au nord de Nogent (F16 FL2 wG3017), où j'ai séjourné dans une maison jusqu'au 31 juillet. Ce jour-là, le vieil homme et le maître d'école sont venus me chercher et m'ont conduit au château d'Ouchamps, près de Thimory (F16, FL2, wG2028). Nous avons voyagé à vélo. J'ai rencontré le F/O Walton au château d'Ouchamps. La suite de mon expérience est relatée par lui dans son rapport (S/P.G(-)2157). |
