Rapport Sgt Greenwood: - ( We took off from ELSHAM WOLDS in a Lancaster at about 2030 hrs on 12 Jul 44. We were shot down on the way to the target South-east of MUSSEY (N.W EUROPE, 1:250,000, Sheet 9, U 02). The plane caught fire and went into a steep dive. I baled out with difficulty and landed in a filed on the edge of some woods. Other aircraft were bombing our aircraft in mistake for the target, so I got away as quickly as possible. I hid in the woods for about half an hour and then set out in a Westerly direction. As it was cloudy, I walked about for about six hours not knowing where I was going. I had lost my escape box when I baled out.
The first village I came to was TREMONT-SUR-SAULX (Sheet 9, U 01). I crossed the road and hid in some woods. Eventually a woodcutter came along and I spoke to him, explaining who I was. He told me to remain in the woods, and fetched me some food and a pair of shoes. I had lost my flying boots when baling out. About 2000 hrs he told me to go to ROBERT-ESPAGNE (U 01) and thence through the Forest of TROISFONTAINES (T 91), where I would try to contact patriots.
I got as far as ROBERT-ESPAGNE, but my feet were very sore and I could not walk any further. I came across a farm and hid and watched it for half an hour. Eventually I saw the farmer and asked him if he could hide me for the night. I stayed the night in his barn and spent the next two days in the woods while he was trying to get help for me. On 16 Jul the farmer told me he had arranged for a lorry to fetch me and take me to a place where I could be flown back to ENGLAND in a few days.
I went by lorry to REVIGNY SUR ORNAIN (T 92), where I stayed with a family until 10 Aug. At this house I met Sgt. TEARE, R.A.F. During my stay six other members of the R.A.F. arrived, Sgt. BROWN, Sgt. JOHNSON, F/O BARNVILLE, R.C.A.F. and two of his crew. As the house was so crowded and there were some Germans living next door, we decided to split up into small groups. Sgts. BROWN, JOHNSON and my self were taken to LIGNY-EN-BARROIS (U 21) and stayed here for three weeks until the Americans arrived.

Nous avons décollé d'Elsham Wolds à bord d'un Lancaster vers 20h30 le 12 juillet 1944. Nous avons été abattus en route vers notre cible, au sud-est de Mussey [55] (Europe du Nord-Ouest, carte au 1/250 000, Feuille 9, ZNG vU0426). L'avion a pris feu et a piqué du nez. J'ai réussi à m'éjecter avec difficulté et j'ai atterri dans un champ en lisière de bois. D'autres avions bombardaient notre appareil, le prenant par erreur pour notre cible. Je me suis donc éloigné aussi vite que possible. Je me suis caché dans les bois pendant une demi-heure environ, puis j'ai pris la direction de l'ouest. Le ciel étant couvert, j'ai erré pendant environ six heures sans savoir où j'allais. J'avais perdu ma boîte de survie en m'éjectant.
Le premier village que j'ai rencontré était Tremont-sur-Saulx (vU0319). J'ai traversé la route et je me suis caché dans les bois. Finalement, un bûcheron est passé et je lui ai parlé, en lui expliquant qui j'étais. Il m'a dit de rester dans les bois et m'a apporté de la nourriture et des chaussures. J'avais perdu mes bottes de vol en m'éjectant. Vers 20 h, il m'a dit d'aller à Robert-Espagne (vU0119) puis de traverser la forêt de Trois-fontaines (vT91), où je tenterais de contacter des patriotes.
Je suis arrivé à Robert-Espagne, mais j'avais très mal aux pieds et je ne pouvais plus avancer. Je suis tombé sur une ferme, je m'y suis caché et je l'ai observée pendant une demi-heure. Finalement, j'ai aperçu le fermier et je lui ai demandé s'il pouvait m'héberger pour la nuit. J'ai passé la nuit dans sa grange et les deux jours suivants dans les bois pendant qu'il essayait de me trouver de l'aide. Le 16 juillet, le fermier m'a dit qu'il avait fait venir un camion pour me conduire à un endroit d'où je pourrais être rapatrié en Angleterre quelques jours plus tard. Je suis arrivé en camion à Revigny-sur-Ornain (vT9929), où j'ai été hébergé par une famille jusqu'au 10 août. C'est là que j'ai rencontré le Sgt Teare, de la Royal Air Force. Pendant mon séjour, six autres membres de la RAF sont arrivés : le Sgt Brown, le Sgt Johnson, le Lt Barnville, de la RCAF, et deux membres de son équipage. La maison étant très petite et des Allemands habitant la maison voisine, nous avons décidé de nous séparer en petits groupes. Les sergents Brown et Johnson, ainsi que moi-même, avons été transférés à Ligny-en-Barrois (vU2213) et y sommes restés trois semaines, jusqu'à l'arrivée des Américains.
