Rapport F/O Arnold: - ( We took off from Dunholme Lodge in a Lancaster aircraft on 12 Jul 44 about 2200 hours. I baled out over Auberive (J 01) about 0205 hours (13 Jul) and landed in a thick bush. My parachute was caught in a tree and as I could hear voices I left it there and cleared off as quickly as I could.
I walked until sunrise when I lay up in some woods for the whole of the day. That evening I met a farmer and declared myself to him. He took me to a house in the village of Colmiers Le Haut (H 91) where I was given a meal. I was then escorted by the daughter of the house to the railway line which led to Recy sur Ourse (H 91) where I was told that I would be able to contact the F.F.I. I reached the town at 0300 hours and slept in a lane until dawn, when I made my way out of the town. After walking for some distance I entered a wood and remained there all day. About 1600 hours I set out again and had only gone a short distance when I was stopped by two girls on bicycles who said that their brother had seen me through binoculars from the château where they were living, and they took me to their home for the night. The next morning two F.F.I. men called and took me with them to their camp near Recy sur Ourse. Here I met Sgt. Lamb Sgt. Brooks and Sgt. Wharton all of my crew. From this point my story is the same as that of Sgt. Lamb.

J'ai sauté au-dessus d'Auberive (J 01) [52] vers 02h05 (13 juillet) et j'ai atterri dans un buisson épais. Mon parachute s'est coincé dans un arbre et comme j'entendais des voix, je l'ai laissé là et je suis parti au plus vite.
J'ai marché jusqu'au lever du soleil et je suis resté allongé dans les bois toute la journée. Ce soir-là, j'ai rencontré un agriculteur et je me suis présenté à lui. Il m'a emmené dans une maison du village de Colmier-le-Haut (H 91) où on m'a offert un repas. J'ai ensuite été escorté par la fille de la maison jusqu'à la voie ferrée qui mène à Recy-sur-Ourse (H 91) où on m'a indiqué que je pourrais contacter les Forces Françaises de l'IntérieurFFI. Je suis arrivé en ville à 3 heures du matin et j'ai dormi dans une ruelle jusqu'à l'aube puis j'ai quitté la ville.
Après avoir marché quelque temps, je suis entré dans un bois et j'y suis resté toute la journée. Vers 16 heures, je suis reparti et j'avais à peine parcouru une courte distance lorsque j'ai été arrêté par deux jeunes filles à bicyclette qui m'ont dit que leur frère m'avait vu avec des jumelles depuis le château où elles vivaient et m'ont emmené chez elles pour la nuit.
Le lendemain matin, deux F.F.I. m'on appelé et m'on emmené avec eux dans leur camp près de Recy-sur-Ourse. C'est là que j'ai rencontré le Sgt Lamb, le Sgt Brooks et le Sgt Wharton, tous deux de mon équipage. À partir de ce moment-là, mon histoire est la même que celle du sergent Lamb. Des membres des FFI m'ont dit que le Sgt Green, de mon équipage, ainsi que deux de ses assistants, avaient été capturés par les Allemands.

Rapport Sgt BRAY: - ( We took off from Dunholme Lodge in a Lancaster aircraft on 12 Jul 44. Before reaching our target we were hit by Flak, and had to bale out. I landed in a wood North of Château Villain (Y 94). My parachute was entangled in the trees, and I could not get it down. Hiding tue rest of my equipment, I started walking, and finally came in sight of the village. I contacted a farmer who brought me food and civilian clothes and gave me a bicycle. I was taken to a farm belonging to a member of the Resistance movement. The next day I was taken to the village of Precy (Y 58) where I stayed at a restaurant for four days. I then went to another farm, where I stayed until 10 Aug, when I was taken to a camp.
I stayed in the camp for ten days, leaving in company with a French officer for Paris. I left Paris by truck, still in company with the French officer, for Bordeaux. We were passing through the town of Angouleme (Z 37) when we were arrested by the Germans. Our civilian papers, however, were in good order, and thy let us go, but confiscated the truck. We walked out of the town the next day, caught a train, and arrived in Bordeaux, where we stayed until the town was liberated by F.F.I. on 26 Aug. We were advised by the F.F.I. to go to Spain, so we left by truck and arrived at Tarbes (V 10). I stayed here until 8 Sep, when I left for Hendaye (S 62), where I met the British representative. Je suis alors allé dans une autre ferme où je suis resté jusqu'au 10 août, date à laquelle j'ai été emmené dans un camp. Je suis resté dix jours au camp puis suis parti, en compagnie d'un officier français, pour Paris.
J’ai ensuite quitté Paris en camion, toujours en compagnie de l'officier français, pour Bordeaux. Nous traversions la ville d'Angoulême [16] (Z 37) lorsque nous avons été arrêtés par les Allemands. Nos papiers civils étaient en bon état et ils nous ont laissé passer mais ont confisqué le camion. Le lendemain, nous avons quitté la ville à pied, pris un train et sommes arrivés à Bordeaux où nous sommes restés jusqu'à la libération de la ville par les F.F.I. le 26 août. Nous avons été informés par les F.F.I. comment aller en Espagne ; nous sommes donc partis en camion et sommes arrivés à Tarbes [65] (V 10). Je suis resté ici jusqu'au 8 septembre, date à laquelle je suis parti pour Hendaye [64] (S 62) où j'ai rencontré le représentant britannique. J'ai quitté Biriatou en avion pour l'Angleterre le 13 septembre 44.

I hid my parachute, harness, and mae west in a wood and stayed in the wood until 0500 hrs, when I walked through it. At noon I contacted a farmer who took me to his barn. He supplied me with food and contacted the Maquis. I remained in the barn until 14 Jul, when I was taken by truck to a Maquis camp near Recey-sur-Ource (H 8912), where I met Sgts. Wharton and Lamb of my crew. On 15 Jul F/O Arnold of my crew was brought to the camp.

J'ai caché mon parachute, mon harnais et ma Gilet de sauvetage gonflable (du nom de Mary 'Mae' West au buste généreux) Mae West dans un bois et j'y suis resté jusqu'à 5 h, heure à laquelle je l'ai traversé à pied. À midi, j'ai contacté un fermier qui m'a emmené dans sa grange. Il m'a donné à manger et a contacté les maquis. Je suis resté dans la grange jusqu'au 14 juillet, date à laquelle j'ai été conduit en camion à un camp de maquis près de Recey-sur-Ource [21] (FL2 wH8912), où j'ai retrouvé les Sgts Wharton et Lamb de mon équipage. Rapport Sgt Lamb: - ( We took off from Dunholme Lodge in a Lancaster at 2147 hrs on 22 Jul 44. The aircraft was shot diwn near Recey-sur-Ource (H 91). I baled out and on landing on the ground I buried my parachute, harness, mae west and flying clothing. I then opened my pack and by my compass I started off in a South-westerly direction which led me through a wood. I remained in this wood for a day and a half. I waited until dark on the evening of 26 Jul and started walking along a road and continued walking all that night and the following morning.
I saw a worker in the field and as no one was around, I asked if he would give me something to eat. He took me home and told me he would take me to a Maquis camp in the afternoon. At the Maquis camp I met my navigator and bomb aimer. The next day my pilot also arrived. We stayed here for about ten days. They then handed us on to another camp at Grancey le Château (O 09) where we stayed for days. About 15 Aug we were sent to a camp 15 km North of Dijon (O 06), where we met personnel belonging to the 1st S.A.S. Things were becoming rather sticky, so we decided to move on. As two members of the party did not want to come, the skipper and I went on alone. We went by car to Aignay-la-Duc (N 89), where we met a Major of the 2nd S.A.S., who took us to his camp. Two days later we decided to leave. We got a lift on a jeep, but unfortunately, we were attacked by Germans on the way. We were forced to return to Aignay-la-Duc, where once again the F.F.I. took us under their wing. From here we obtained two guides who took us to the American lines. J'ai vu un ouvrier sur le terrain et comme personne n'était autour, j'ai demandé s'il pouvait me donner quelque chose à manger. Il m'a ramené chez lui et m'a dit qu'il m'emmènerait dans un camp de maquis dans l'après-midi. Au camp du Maquis, j'ai rencontré mon navigateur et mon bombardier. Le lendemain, mon pilote est également arrivé. Nous sommes restés ici une dizaine de jours. Ils nous ont ensuite transférés dans un autre camp à Grancey-le-Château-Neuvelle (FL2 wJ0200) où nous sommes restés plusieurs jours. Vers le 15 août, nous avons été envoyés dans un camp à 15 km au nord de Dijon (O 06) où nous avons rencontré des personnels appartenant au 1er S.A.S. Les choses devenant plutôt délicates, nous avons décidé de passer à autre chose. Comme deux membres du groupe ne voulaient pas venir, le capitaine et moi sommes partis seuls. Nous sommes allés en voiture à Aignay-le-Duc (N 89) où nous avons rencontré un Major du 2e S.A.S. qui nous a emmené dans son camp. Deux jours plus tard, nous avons décidé de partir. Nous avons été emmenés en jeep mais, malheureusement, nous avons été attaqués par des Allemands en chemin. Nous avons été contraints de retourner à Aignay-le-Duc où une nouvelle fois les F.F.I. nous ont pris sous leur aile. De là, nous avons obtenu deux guides qui nous ont conduits jusqu'aux lignes américaines. Il nous a fallu environ 48 heures pour rejoindre les troupes alliées à Troyes [10] (ZNG vY2973).

Rapport Sgt Wharton: - ( We took off from Dunholme Lodge in a Lancaster aircraft at 2140 hrs on 12 Jul 44/ I baled out at 0140 hrs on 13 Jul and landed about five kms. Of Gurgy-le-Château (H 9418). I left my parachute and harness in a tree and hid my mae west under a bush. I then walked parallel to the Chatillon-Dijon road and about on hour later contacted a man who took me to his home, where I was given food and shelter for the night. The following day (14 Jul) I was taken in a horse wagon to a house on the edge of the wood N.W. of Recey-sur-Ource (H 8912). Later that evening a group of Maquis came to the house. Sgt. Lamb and Sgt Brooks, of my crew, were with them. We were taken to their camp in the wood. The following day F/O Arnold of my crew arrived at the camp. The four of us remained at the camp until 24 Jul, when we were taken in a covered wagon to a Maquis camp near Grancey-le-Château (O 0200). On 5 Aug we were taken by car to a farm about five kms. South of Villecomte (O 0582), where we met F/Sgt. Millett, R.A.F.
On 14 Aug a detachment of the 1st S.A.S. arrived and we joined them.
On 24 Aug F/O Arnold and Sgt. Lamb went off with a Maquis escort in an attempt to get through the Allied lines at Troyes (Y 2973).
On 4 Sep the detachment of 1st S.A.S. was ordered to return to the Morvain mountain area, and F/Sgt. Millett, Sgt. Brooks and I accompanied them. We were sent to Orleans and then to the U.K. by air.Original) - (WO 208/3323/2367 - source : Nat Arch UK - Traduction Ph Laroyenne):

Le lendemain, le F/O Arnold de mon équipage aussi est arrivé au camp. Nous sommes restés tous les quatre au camp jusqu'au 24 juillet, date à laquelle nous avons été conduit en charrette couverte vers un camp du maquis près de Grancey-le-Château (FL2 wJ0200). Le 5 août, nous avons été emmenés en voiture dans une ferme à environ cinq kilomètres au sud de Villecomte (FL2 wO0582) où nous avons rencontré le Sgt Millett, de la R.A.F.
Le 14 août, un détachement du 1er S.A.S. est arrivé et nous les avons rejoints.
Le 24 août, le F/O Arnold et le Sgt. Lamb sont partis avec une escorte du maquis pour tenter de franchir les lignes alliées à Troyes (ZNG vY2973).
Le 4 septembre, le détachement du 1er S.A.S. a reçu l'ordre de retourner dans la région montagneuse du Morvan et le F/Sgt Millett, le Sgt Brooks et moi les avons accompagnés. Nous avons été envoyés à Orléans puis au Royaume-Uni par avion.
