Rapport 2Lt Cook: - ( I was flying Gatepost White Two position, with Lt Atkinson leading on 18 August 1944. We were patrolling near the Seine River, and decided to cross over to the East side to look for ground targets. At about 5000 feet over Gisors, France, we went into string, and Lt Atkinson, White Leader told us to stay above while he went down to look over some vehicles in the center of the town. I was flying his wing so I went down to about 2000 feet and then leveled off. On the way down we encountered light flak coming from some railroad cars North of the town. Lt Atkinson was hit and pulled up to about 2000 feet, when his ship started burning around the exhaust and the bombs. He bailed out at about 1500 feet. His chute opened all right and he landed in a field safely. The ship landed about 300 yards from him. He was approximately seven miles south of Gisors.
