Rapport 2Lt Webb: - (My P-38 was shot down in a battle with 16 FW 190's near Chartres.
I bailed out at 600 feet while the ship was on fire, and my chute opened just before I hit the ground my head was blooding but I don't know how it was cut. I landed in an open wheat field near Voves and after hiding my chute and flying suit I destroyed private papers and took off my insignia. As I left the field in the direction of Voves a French farmer motioned for me to hide in a nearby thicket. I did so and the farmer indicated py pointing to his watch that I should remain in the thicket until 1800 hrs, when someone would come. Not sure whether to trust him, I hid in another thicket from which I could observe the one in which he had told me to remain. At 1800 the same Frenchman returned and I accompanied him to his house, where I received food, wine and civilian clothes. The next day a French officer on a motorcycle appeared, and although I could not understand him he was very friendly. I gathered he had sighted an American patrol and, after changing back to my uniform, I went with him to a barn which a resistance unit used as an arms depot. It was full of German rifles. J'ai atterri dans un champ de blé à découvert près de Voves ; après avoir dissimulé mon parachute et ma combinaison de vol, j'ai détruit mes documents personnels et retiré mes insignes. Alors que je quittais le champ en direction de Voves, un agriculteur français m'a fait signe de me cacher dans un fourré voisin. Je l'ai fait, et il m'a indiqué, en montrant sa montre, que je devais rester là jusqu'à 18 heures, moment où quelqu'un viendrait me chercher. Ne sachant pas si je pouvais lui faire confiance, je suis allé me cacher dans un autre fourré d'où je pouvais surveiller celui où il m'avait dit de rester. À 18 heures, le même Français est revenu et je l'ai suivi chez lui ; on m'y a donné à manger, du vin et des vêtements civils. Le lendemain, un officier français à moto est arrivé ; bien que je ne comprenne pas ce qu'il disait, il s'est montré très amical. J'ai compris qu'il avait repéré une patrouille américaine ; après avoir remis mon uniforme, je l'ai accompagné jusqu'à une grange servant de dépôt d'armes à un groupe de résistants. Elle regorgeait de fusils allemands. Peu après, une unité de reconnaissance de la 5e division blindée est arrivée et je me suis joint à elle. |
