Rapport Sgt Jeffreys: - ( Our Horsa glider crash landed at 0100 hrs, 6 Jun 44 2 miles N. of VIMONT. We hit in an orchard. The pilot hurt his leg and the tail of the glider was smashed. For two hours we tried to get the tail off, but failed. We tried to hammer out the sides, but finally gave up. The jeep and two motorcycles were badly tangled together. At last we contacted a French farmer, from whom we found that we had been dropped 8 miles too far S. Coming back to the glider we saw 30 Germans and a tank clustered about it, so we started off north to TROARN, six of us. At RUPIERRE we met an English speaking Frenchman who told us that there were other parachutists at JANVILLE. There we met 12 men in charge of a corporal at a Chateau. The maid of the Chateau reported that the Germans were coming, so all 9 of us hid in the swamp across the river. Sgt. FOSTER and I went on a reccy to the N. and found some German artillery between us and TROARN. A German car stopped at the Chateau grounds and a shot was heard. We scattered out and moved away, and at that time lost contact with the 12 other parachutists. S/Sgt. RIDGEWAY, Sgt. FOSTER and I went back to JANVILLE to see the English speaking Frenchman, and spent the night there. On the 7th we all moved to a ditch near JANVILLE, six of us. On the 9th we were joined by Lt. BROWN of the 9th Para Bn. and two privates. We moved up together toward the lines, and by the 14th reached ST. PAIR. The ST. PAIR - TROARN road was full of Germans and we hid in a ditch nearby for about 5 days.Original) - ( PARTIE I - WO 208/3350/1280 - Source : Nat Arch UK - Traduction Ph Laroyenne): Notre planeur Horsa s'est écrasé à 1 h du matin, le 6 juin 1944, à 3 km au nord de Vimont [14]. Nous avons atterri dans un verger. Le pilote s'est blessé à la jambe et l'empennage du planeur était détruit. Pendant deux heures, nous avons essayé de le dégager, en vain. Nous avons tenté de redresser les flancs à coups de marteau, mais avons finalement abandonné. La jeep et deux motos étaient fortement emmêlées. Nous avons finalement réussi à contacter un fermier français, qui nous a appris que nous avions été largués 13 km trop au sud. En revenant vers le planeur, nous avons aperçu une trentaine d'Allemands et un char regroupés autour. Nous sommes donc partis vers le nord, en direction de Troarn, à six. À Rupierres, nous avons rencontré un Français anglophone qui nous a indiqué la présence d'autres parachutistes à Janville. Là, nous avons rencontré douze hommes sous les ordres d'un caporal dans un château. La femme de chambre du château a signalé l'arrivée des Allemands, et nous nous sommes donc cachés tous les neuf dans le marais de l'autre côté de la rivière. Foster et moi avons effectué une reconnaissance vers le nord et avons découvert de l'artillerie allemande entre nous et Troarn. Une voiture allemande s'est arrêtée sur le terrain du château et un coup de feu a retenti. Nous nous sommes dispersés et avons pris la fuite, perdant alors le contact avec les douze autres parachutistes. Le Sgt/C Ridgeway, le Sgt Foster et moi sommes retournés à Janville pour voir le Français anglophone et y avons passé la nuit. Le 7, nous nous sommes tous réfugiés dans un fossé près de Janville, six d'entre nous. Le 9, le Lt Brown du 9e bataillon de parachutistes et deux soldats nous ont rejoints. Nous avons progressé ensemble vers les lignes et, le 14, nous avons atteint St-Pair. La route St-Pair - Troarn était pleine d'Allemands et nous nous sommes cachés dans un fossé à proximité pendant environ cinq jours. Rapport Sgt Jeffreys: - ( On 20 Jun we made a detour around SANNERVILLE, but were fired on in an orchard. We withdrew, but could not find Sgt. FOSTER. He did not come back and we went to ST. PAIR again. We kept trying the front but could not get through. The Germans were very thick. On 29 Jun we lost Lt. BROWN, S/Sgt. RIDGEWAY and Sgt. ALLEN as we moved out of a ditch to avoid a German half track. I do not know where they went. On the 20th we hid in a barn where Lt. WINSTON came to pick us up. On 1 Jul Sgt. CLARKE on the 9th Para Bn and two other men joined us. We had many plans to get through the lines and on 2 Jul I went on a recce toward RUPIERRE and was captured at 2400 hrs. I was given a short interrogation and sent to ST. PIERRE SUR DIVES in a chateau for one week. The food was bad, we were about 40. I was moved to ALENCON where there were about 400 P/Ws for two weeks. I then went to NONNANT-LE-PIN. On 23 Jul four of us were put in a truck with 3 Germans. We were given white handkerchiefs to wave if planes strafe us. On of our planes came over and did not fire, but the Germans hit the hedge at once. We did too and kept on going. We were about 5 miles N. of ALENCON. I went to some French and told them who I was. They hid me on a farm for about a week, where I met Cpl. BILSKY on 29 Jul. When the 5th Armoured came through NONNANT-LE-PIN on 12 Aug we joined them. We met Col. ANDERSON and gave him what information we could before being moved back further.Original) - ( PARTIE II): Le 20 juin, nous avons fait un détour par Sannerville, mais avons essuyé des tirs dans un verger. Nous avons continué à tenter de percer les lignes ennemies, mais sans succès. Les Allemands étaient très nombreux. Le 29 juin, nous avons perdu le Lt Brown, le Sgt/C Ridgeway et le Sgt Allen alors que nous sortions d'un fossé pour éviter un semi-chenillé allemand. J'ignore ce qu'ils sont devenus. Le 20, nous nous sommes cachés dans une grange où le Lt Winston est venu nous chercher. Le 1er juillet, le Sgt Clarke du 9e bataillon de parachutistes et deux autres hommes nous ont rejoints. Nous avions plusieurs plans pour franchir les lignes et le 2 juillet, je suis parti en reconnaissance vers Rupierres et j'ai été capturé à minuit. J'ai subi un bref interrogatoire et j'ai été envoyé à St-Pierre-sur-Dives dans un château pendant une semaine. La nourriture était mauvaise, nous étions une quarantaine. J'ai ensuite été transféré à Alençon [61] où se trouvaient environ 400 prisonniers de guerre pendant deux semaines. Je suis ensuite allé à Nonant-le-Pin. Le 23 juillet, quatre d'entre nous ont été placés dans un camion avec trois Allemands. On nous a donné des mouchoirs blancs à agiter si des avions nous mitraillaient. Un de nos avions est passé au-dessus de nous sans tirer, mais les Allemands se sont immédiatement mis à couvert derrière une haie. Nous avons continué notre route. Nous étions à environ 8 kilomètres au nord d'Alençon. Je suis allé trouver des Français et leur ai dit qui j'étais. Ils m'ont caché dans une ferme pendant environ une semaine, où j'ai rencontré le Cpl Bilsky le 29 juillet. Lorsque la 5e division blindée est passée par Nonant-le-Pin le 12 août, nous les avons rejoints. Nous avons rencontré le colonel Anderson et lui avons donné les informations dont nous disposions avant d'être déplacés plus loin. |
