Rapport du 1Lt Thomas E Norrsi (page 6 du MACR): "I was n° 4 man in Blue flight, led by Capt Broadhead. N°2 was Lt Drollinger. Shortly after the rendez-vous at 22,000 ft with the bombers, Lt Drollinger's plane began to throw coolant out of the vent. Capt Broadhead called him and told him to go home; he assigned me to escort him. We turned 180 degrees and started home. A minute later black smoke began to blow back out of the exhaust stacks. Then Lt Drollinger called me over R/T, saying that his engine was running very rought and his cockpit was fogging up. We continued flying, losing altitude to about 12,000 ft. During this time I attempted to fix the position by use of "D" channel. I was unsuccessful because of the distance. A 1405 BST Lt Drollinger rolled his airplane over on its back and bailed out from 10,000 ft. He delayed opening his chute until about 5,000 ft. I saw his parachute open but did not see him land. After circling the position to get landmarks, I turned and rejoined the squadron. Lt Drollinger was very cool and stayed with his ship as long as possible. I feel certain that he is safe, for he was heading for a field not far from a farmhouse" -------------------------- (J'étais le n ° 4 de la section Blue, dirigé par le Capt Broadhead.
