The plane was ditched in the sea near La Rochelle, France on 26 Oct 44. Due to heavy clouds the ship became separated from the rest of the formation and headed on its own in a southerly direction. In the vicinity of La Rochelle, ground batteries opened up and the ship sustained hits in the nose, which set it on fire and hits in the left engine and rudder controls. When the pilot was bringing the ship down for ditching, a shell blew off his right leg and I took over the controls. About eight feet from the water, I was hit by a 40-mm shell below the left knee and knocked unconscious and as a result my memory of the events which occured for the next two days is hazy and blank. In addition to the crew members, we were carrying 15 infantrymen; the only names I remember are: Thompson, Tretheway, Jurczak, Stuka, Swackhammer, Turner, F Thomas, Timms, Stufflebeam, McFall, Tolmi and Thomgack. Thomgack was drowned after the plane was ditched. The infantrymen, with the exception of Thomgack, and the crew, with the exception of Lt Kriechbaum who died, were exchanged and returned to Allied control. I do not know the grades of the infantrymen. I was informed by the Germans that an operation had been performed on the leg of the pilot and that he had died three days later. The Germans had also found the body of the drowned infantryman, Thomgack, and I and four the other Americans were allowed to go to the funeral of the two Americans. They were buried in a civilian cemetery in La Rochelle, I did not view the bodies, which were enclosed in a box.

À environ huit pieds de l'eau, j'ai été frappé par un obus de 40 mm sous le genou gauche et j'ai perdu connaissance et, par conséquent, ma mémoire des événements qui se sont produits pendant les deux jours suivants est trouble et vide. En plus des membres d'équipage, nous transportions 15 fantassins; les seuls noms dont je me souviens sont: Thompson, Tretheway, Jurczak, Stuka, Swackhammer, Turner, F Thomas, Timms, Stufflebeam, McFall, Tolmi et Thomgack. Thomgack s'est noyé après que l'avion a été abandonné. Ils ont été enterrés dans un cimetière civil de La Rochelle, je n'ai pas vu les corps qui étaient enfermés dans une boîte. )
