Rapport de fuites (Sgts Allen et Bradley) - (Appendix C - One of the peasants whom we met near La Malmaison about 1500 hrs on 18 Apr 43 was named Eugene. He was accompanied by Robert, (a baker's assistant), and a Polish labourer. It was these men who supplied us with civilian clothes. At dusk Robert took us to his mother's house on the outskirts of La Malmaison. Later, we removed to the house of the baker who was Robert's employer. We do not know his name. About 2000 hrs on 19 Apr 43 we were taken to a third house. We told Robert that we wished to go to Reims. He said that in that case he would take us there and introduce us to his brother, who lived in Reims. About 0445 hrs on 19 Apr, Robert and Eugene took us to Amifontaine. When we found that no trains for Reims were stopping here that day, they took us another station, the name of which we cannot remember precisely. It sounded something like "La sistienne" (not marked on the map), but may have been St. Erme. On the way here we met a woman of about 45, whose name do not know. Robert and Eugene then left us, and the woman took us to a seedsman's shop in St Erme (?). Here we met Constance, a man of about 50. He told us that there were Gestapo officials at the railway station, who were looking for two English airmen, and that we must stay for the night at his house. He inspected our identity disc, and took our maps and our Belgian and Dutch currency from us. Later he told us that he was a member of an organisation and added that a Halifax aircraft had crashed some time before hear his house. He did not tell us the names or fates of its crew. Constance gave us each a pair of new civilian shoes. Next morning, 20 Apr, a forestry official took Allen on the back of his motor cycle to Laon, while Constance took Bradley there by bus. We all met at a cafe, and in a short time were joined by two women from Paris. These women were Mme. Benech and the Marquise de Bizien, alias "Leslie". At 1530 hrs the women took us by train to Paris, where we went to Mme. Benech's flat at 7, rue Alfred Bruneau, near the Trocadero. We remained here until 3 May 43. "Leslie" told us that she was a member of an organisation which was concerned with the entry of agents by parachute, and that her organisation no longer dealt with R.A.F. evaders.
Rapport de fuite (Sgts Allen et Bradley) - ( She told us, however, that she would put us in touch with an organisation which could help us. While here we were given new civilian clothes. After some time we were visited by M. Paul. He asked Allen for his identity discs - Bradley having meanwhile lost his. Paul also asked us the names of the other members of our crew, our squadron and station number, and where our aircraft had crashed. On 1 May we were taken to a photographer to be photographed. About 2130 hrs on 3 May Mme. Benech took us to a Metro station, where we were met by Paul. He took us to a flat occupied by M. Fouquerel in No. 10 rue de Oudinot, where we met Group Captain Whitley, and Sgts. Davies and Strange. On the morning of 6 May a girl took us to a park where Paul and "Leslie" met us with a car. We were then taken to the house of Dr. Tinel, 254, Boulevard St. Germain, where we stayed until 17 May. There was an R.C.A.F. sergeant here, but we cannot remember his name. While here a girl brought us identity cards and workmen's papers. About 1900 hrs on 17 May a woman helper took us to the grounds of of the University of Paris, where we met Paul and Jacques. Jacques gave us 1000 French francs each and took us to the Gare d'Austerlitz. On our way there were joined by a Free Frenchman named Jean. It was discovered that his identity card was not in order and he had to leave us. At 2030 hrs, with Jacques and two other Frenchmen, we boarded the train for Toulouse. Just after Orleans a German officer came along the train and inspected our papers. There was no further incident during the journey. We arrived at Toulouse at 0800 hrs on 18 May. At 1500 hrs we caught a train to Foix, where we arrived at 1900 hrs. We stayed that night in a very poor kind of hotel. Next morning, 19 May, we were joined by Jean, The Frenchman whom we had met on our way to the Gare d'Austerlitz. At 1900 hrs Jacques handed us over to a Spanish guide, who had with him a Free French sailor named Michel. Jacques then left us. Our Spanish guide then led us towards the Spanish frontier. We had with us a load of bread and six hard-boiled eggs. We walked until 0300 hrs on 20 May, when our guide told us that we were passing "through the German lines".
Rapport de fuite (Sgts Allen et Bradley) - ( Shortly after this we lay up for a time. At 2100 hrs on 21 May, we were joined by a second guide, who said he was taking us into Andorra. We then had a very difficult walk through the mountains, and arrived at Andorra Vieille about 200 hrs on 22May. Our second guide left us just before we arrived here. Our first guide took us to the cafe-hotel de Pyrenees, where the owner, Fransisco Perez, received us, and changed our French money into Spanish currency. Our guide then left us. We stayed with Perez until 24 May At 2200 hrs on 24 May a Spanish innkeeper took us by car to a point just of the Andorran-Spanish frontier. We then walked across country to a farm, where we were joined by another Spaniard. We walked on until 1000 hrs on 25 May, when our guide left us in a wood, and we rested. About 1400 hrs our guides returned with a third Spaniard, Antonio, and some food. Just before dark we left for the innkeeper's village, the name of which we do not know. We arrived here about midnight. While here we wrote a letter to the British Consul in Barcelona. We stayed here until 27 May, but from 0400 hrs each day until dusk we hid in some woods near the village. At 2100 hrs on 27 May the innkeeper and one of the guides came for us. For three days we walked across country, sleeping in barns at night. On 31 May we arrived at a small town. Here we met a Frenchman named Jacques, whom we had not seen before. With this man and Antonio we caught a train to Barcelona, where we arrived about 1100 hrs on 1 Jun. We then went by taxi to the British Consulate. Later we were taken to the Police station. At the Consulate, Allan's hair was faked to make him appear older, and we were told to say that we were English civilians who had escaped from France. Allen was told to say that he introduced us to the Chief of Police, who made no difficulty about issuing us with Spanish identity cards. We then returned to the Consulate where we stayed till 4 Jun., when we left by train for Madrid, with a member of Frenchmen. We arrived at Madrid at 1800 hrs on 5 Jun, and went to the British Embassy, where we met Mr. Cresswell and S/Ldr Taylor. We stayed in the Embassy until 17 Jun, when we left by train for La Linea. We arrived at Gibraltar on the following afternoon.Original) - PARTIE III - source : Nat Arch UK WO208/5582/1251-1252 - Traduction Ph Laroyenne
