Traduction d’extrait du MACR 15926 - (With complete disregard for his personal safety and endangered by exploding ammunition and enveloping flames, 1st Lt Robert H Countryman, O-855267, rushed to the aid of the crew members.
The Medical Personnel, Fire fighters, and Military Police were arriving at the scene as 1st Lt Robert H Countryman, O-855267, came running near the crashed aircraft. He was helped by the Mitiary Police who questionned his presence. 1st Lt Countryman showed the Military Police his crashed aircraft pass and immediately continued on toward the burning plane.
Two crew members were removed from the crashed aircraft and placed in the waiting ambulance parked near the aircraft. Lt Countryman took the fire-hosefrom one of the fire fighters and was helping extinguish the flames while the fire fighter was putting on an asbestos suit to enter the aircraft and rescue another member of the crew.
With the danger increasing rapidly, as the flames enveloped more of the plane, exploding great quantities of ammunitions, Lt Countryman continued in his efforts until the fire reached the bomb-bays, exploding fourteen 250 pounds bombs. The injuries received from the explosion resulted in the death of Lt Countryman, at the dispensary where he was immediately removed.
The explosion also resulted in the death of all crew members, including the two already removed to the ambulance, and many other personnel attempting their rescue.Original) - (source : National Archives US – Page 12956 ) Au mépris total de sa sécurité personnelle et mis en danger par l'explosion de munitions et de flammes enveloppantes, le 1st Lt Robert H Countryman, O-855267, s'est précipité au secours des membres d'équipage.
Le personnel médical, les pompiers et la police militaire arrivaient sur les lieux lorsque le 1er Lt Robert H Countryman, O-855267, est arrivé en courant près de l'avion écrasé. Il a été aidé par la police militaire qui a mis en doute sa présence. Le 1er Lt Countryman a montré à la police militaire le laissez-passer de son avion écrasé et a immédiatement continué vers l'avion en feu.
Deux membres d'équipage ont été retirés de l'avion écrasé et placés dans l'ambulance en attente garée près de l'avion. Le Lt Countryman a pris le tuyau d'incendie de l'un des pompiers et aidait à éteindre les flammes pendant que le pompier enfilait une combinaison amiante pour entrer dans l'avion et sauver un autre membre de l'équipage.
Le danger augmentant rapidement, comme les flammes enveloppant une plus grande partie de l'avion, faisant exploser de grandes quantités de munitions, le Lt Countryman poursuivit ses efforts jusqu'à ce que le feu atteigne les soutes à bombes, faisant exploser quatorze bombes de 250 livres. Les blessures subies lors de l'explosion ont entraîné la mort du Lt Countryman, au dispensaire où il a été immédiatement évacué.
L'explosion a également entraîné la mort de tous les membres d'équipage, y compris les deux déjà transportés à l'ambulance, et de nombreux autres personnel tentant leur sauvetage.
