Rapport (2Lt Diamond) - ( On August 18, 1944 on a bombing and strafing mission to the Paris area I was leading "Caboose, Red section" and lost my No. 2, 3 and 4 men. Lt. Conley was my No. 2, Lt. Smith my No. 3 and Lt. Rosenson my No. 4.
We had just bombed the Marshalling Yards and I was attacking a truck North of the town of La Ferte when my section was jumped by 50 plus Me-109's and Fw-190's. I called for a break and either my No. 2 or my No. 3 man stayed on my tail and wouldn't break. I saw an enemy aircraft come up behind him and I cailed for him to break again. However, he still continued following me. The enemy aircraft opened fire on him and I saw many strikes before the plane burst into flames. I never did see the other two men in my section after we were jumped. I called them on the radio but they didn't answer. I assume that they were shot down in the fight.
