Rapport du 2Lt Norman L Paeth - ( On 29 January 1945, I was flying with Captain Bilderback, who was leading an eight ship squadron. We were led to a target near the Rhine river, in the vivinity of Drusenheim, France, by a flight of two tactical reconnaissance P-51's. The weather was quite bad and we were flying under an overcast at about 4,500 feet.
During Captain Bilderback's dive bomb run on the target, he was hit by flak. He pulled up and made a 270 degree climing turn to the right and headed west. He was trailing very much white smoke. Soon after, his airplane burst into flames and started down. I saw Captain Bildenback leave the plane and saw his chute open. He was very low and hit the ground almost immediately. The plane crashed nearby.
I circled the area and got a position "fix" from "Baggage". He gave me the co-ordinate of R-0615 as my position. Il était très bas et a touché le sol presque immédiatement. L'avion s'est écrasé à proximité.
J'ai fait le tour de la zone et j'ai obtenu un "fix" de position de "Baggages". Il m'a donné les coordonnées de R-0615 comme ma position. J'ai quitté la zone de l'épave et j'ai bombardé la cible, puis j'ai ramené le reste du vol à la maison.
