Photo accident sur www.ww2buddies.com (lien communiqué par R Sobinski) Extrait du rapport d'enquête (Source: Accident Report - AFHRA): At 13h45 hours 9 December 1944 aircraft 42-96043 took-off from A-74 on operational Mission #159. The formation procedure called for individual ascent through the over-cast. No trouble was experienced by the pilot until he had reached an altitude of about 2600 ft. At this time the right engine failed and the pilot turned toward the field. No attempt was made to salvo the 16x250 bombs and on reaching the field there was insufficient altitude or air speed remaining for the gear to be extended and locked. The gear collapsed and the plane skidded to a stop. The co-pilot receveid injuries in climbing out the pilots safety hatch and falling into the right prop before the plane had come to a stop. Eighty percent of responsibility for this accident attribued to the pilot. Improper technique in pilot's handling of the aircraft. It is believed pilot should have salvoed his bomb load immediately and should also have taken advantage of an earlier approach available to runway 33. 20 percent of accident responsibility is attribued to the initial cause of the emergency, engine failure. ) |
