Rapport de perte K.196 du LW594 - (1. The aircraft took off from East Moor to attack Railway facilities at Haine-St. Pierre. The moon just past full and visibility was fairly good.
2. The outward journey was uneventful and the target was attacked on time from 6,700 ft. About two or three minutes later, when the Halifax was flying straight and level, the Mid Upper Gunner heard a bang as if something had hit the port inner engine. At the same time the fuselage was holed in 5 or 6 places near the floor just aft the Rear Spar. The Rear Gunner states that a Ju.88 attacked the Halifax from below and astern but the Mid Upper gunner who talked to the Rear Gunner after landing considers that the direction of attack and type of enemy aircraft are pure suppositions on the part of the Rear Gunner, as he is confident from his conversations just after landing that neither the Rear gunner or any members of the crew saw the enemy aircraft or had any warning of its approach. Visual Monica was carried but no warning was given, possibly because the Wireless Operator was listening to the Group Broadcast which was on at about this time.
3. The Rear Gunner saw sparks and flames going past his turret and the Flight engineer reported that the port inner engine was on fire. The propeller was feathered and the pilot pressed the fire extinguisher button but it did not put out the fire. The Flight engineer advised the Pilot to try to put out the fire by diving and this was tried, but as it did not reduce the fire at all the Pilot gave the order to prepare to abandon the aircraft.

1. L'avion a décollé d'East Moor pour attaquer les installations ferroviaires à Haine-St. Pierre.

The Rear Gunner at once centralised his turret, got his parachute and rotated his turret on to the beam and removed his helmet. The power supply of his turret remained serviceable throughout. After opening the doors of his turret he caught hold of the top of the door frame and pulled his foot out of his boot and managed to get clear of the turret. He pulled the rip cord almost at once and landed safely in a field.
5. On receiving the order to prepare to abandon the aircraft, the Mid Upper gunner got out of his turret and put on his parachute. The Pilot pulled out of the dive at about 6,000 ft and gave the order to abandon the aircraft. The Mid Upper Gunner at once removed his helmet and went to the rear door and slid out feet first. After counting three he pulled the rip cord and his parachute opened satisfactorily. He landed comfortably in the same field as the Rear Gunner. There is a difference of opinion between the two Gunners as to the location of the field, the Rear Gunner considers it to be about 19 miles east of Jeumont (approx. 5020N 0407E), whereas the Mid Upper gunner considers it to be about 5 miles north of Jeumont.
6. While descending, the Mid Upper Gunner saw the aircraft going down in flames. It crashed and burst on the ground and the ammunition could be heard exploding for some time.
