On 8 November 1944, I was returning from a dive bombing mission in a P-47 serial number 42-26051, when we received a call from our field controller instructing us to return to base immediately because the weather was closing in. When we got over our field the overcast extended from 0 to 8,000 feet. I stayed with my flight leader until his fuel was exhausted and he had bailed out. I then flew for about fifteen minutes searching for a hole down through the overcast. At the end of this time my fuel was exhausted and I bailed out at an altitude de 10,000 feet. The time was approximately 1705. |
