Rapport du Major John W Leonard (source: MACR page 8172): I was leading seven Ships from Discharge Squadron on an Armed Recce north-east of Rambervillers, after having dropped our bombs under the direction of Elite Able. Lt Hayes was leader of Yellow Flight and was flying astern of me at 9000 feet when he called in that he had spotted a vehicle and asked to go down. I told him to investigate, and said I would circle at our present position. Yellow three (3), Lt Seale, asked if he should accompany Yellow Leader and Lt Hayes told him not to. I saw Lt Hayes dive down and then lost him under my wing. I was unable to pick him up after that, and gave him two calls on the radio receiving no answer. I than saw an explosion about six (6) miles down the valley - coordinates V-483888 - and then a fire at the same spot. I gave another call to Lt Hayes on the radio, and, after receiving no answer, went down to look at the fire. I could tell that it was an airplane burning; but there were pieces scattered all around the area, and no part of the ship was intact or recognizable. I pulled up and rejoined the Squadron. I did notice any flak when I made my pass. Yellow four (4), Lt Anderson, saw Lt Hayes make two passes on the dect without shooting, before losing track of him. No one in the flight could offer any explanation for the crash. We had not received any flak in the area. ) |
