Rapport du Lt Lester F Kress (MACR): 1. I was flying as leader of Vortex White flight, Col Malmstrom was leading Red flight. We arrived a few minutes later than planned at Haguenau airdrome. Col Malmstrom let down froom 7,000 feet, did a 180 degree turn and went in to starfe. 2. When the Colonel pulled up the second time I noticed he was throwing black smoke, but believed this was due to use supercharger. The Colonel went in again and when he pulled up the smoke had stopprd, but I overran him very quickly. He turned to the north losing altitude. 3. When I came around again his ship was on the ground and the Colonel was climbing out on the wing. We circled once more and the Colonel waved to us. 4. I believe Colonel Malmstrom got out uninjured. My radio was out and I did not hear any of the conveersation that took place before he crash landed.
