Photos Sgt Lackner et documents du livre de Gregory Pons La 9th Air Force Rapport du pilote (source Accident Report): I, T Sgt Robert J Lackner, ASN 15096436, took off at 1200, 26 August 1944 (de Phitiviers 45) in L-5 42-99071, to look for new landing strip, with T Sgt Homer J Bankston, ASN 14059954 as passenger. We landed in a field at approximately 1300 and though field was suitable for landing strip. I started to take off at 13h15 and went to extreme end of field to take-off. Ran engine to full throttle and started take-off run about 1000 feet, put down 30° of flaps and plane wouldn't rise sufficeintly to clear à 3 ft fence at the end of the field. I hit the fence, cut all switches and tried to land in next field. Ship hit high mound of dirt and nosed over. Damage to plane; propeller broken, vertical stabilizer broken off, right airleron damaged. |
