During an air battle over the Dormans region, on June 3, 1940, around 2:30 p.m., a Canadian plane crashed in the territory of the commune of Champaillé (Marne) 1 km north of the Clos Milon farm. [This passage is crossed out in favor of an illegible annotation, partly written in pencil in the margin, but indicating 4 km south of Dormans]
The entire front of the aircraft is embedded in a hole 2.5 meters deep, and to this day, nothing has been done to dig it out.
Some human remains were found near the crash site, and it is assumed that the pilot is trapped in the front of his aircraft, which, being completely destroyed, could not be identified.
From the moment the plane crashed, the wreckage was guarded by soldiers from Colonel Perrey's Group. This senior officer ordered the gendarmes to stop the clearing work they were carrying out with the help of some civilians, claiming that this work was the responsibility of the Air Force for the purpose of investigating the circumstances of the aircraft crash. "Au cours d’un combat aérien sur la Région de Dormans, le 3 Juin 1940 vers 14h30, un avion canadien s’est abattu sur le territoire de la commune de Champaillé (Marne) à 1 Km au Nord de la ferme du Clos Milon. [Ce passage est barré au profit d’une annotation illisible en partie au crayon en marge mais indiquant 4 Km S de Dormans]
Tout l’avant de l’appareil est enfoncé dans un trou de 2m50 de profondeur et jusqu’à ce jour, rien n’a été entrepris pour le dégager.
Quelques débris humains ont été retrouvés à proximité du point de chute et l’on suppose que le pilote se trouve coincé à l’avant de son appareil, lequel étant entièrement détruit n’a pu être identifié.
Dès la chute de l’avion, la garde des débris a été assurée par des soldats du Groupement du Colonel Perrey. Cet officier supérieur a donné ordre aux gendarmes d’arrêter les travaux de dégagement qu’ils effectuaient avec le concours de quelques civils, prétextant que ce travail incombait à l’Armée de l’Air aux fins de déduction sur les circonstances de la chute de l’appareil.
Le 4 Juin vers 20 heures 30, la garde des débris n’était plus assurée".
