Extraits du rapport du 2Lt Raymond T Howard (MACR page 3): I was flying Red Four position on a four plane armed recco in the Belfort, France area and the Rhine River valley region of Germany. The flight leader was on a course of 240 degrees for Lyons, France. Lt Hunger sighted a locomotive and calles Lieut. Traughber the Target. /…/After reaching the town (Vesoul), we sighted one locomotive moving South and a second one was sighted directly in the town itself. /…/ The town was situed between two hills and as we turned to attacked I noticed a brick factory chimney sticking up about one hundred feet on the slope of the hill leading into the town. I called Lt Hunger to watch the chimney on attacking the engine. The engine was to the left of the chimney. I noticed Lt Hunter's tracers hitting the two rear cars of the train. At the time, he had finished shooting. I saw a flash of fire coming from the under left hand side of his plane, apparently hitting the stack, and notice his plane (veer) but appeared to be under control. I begin shooting at the engine and pulled and saw that Lt Hunger's left landing gearwas down. Before I could call him I saw the plane hit the ground approximately 2 miles southeast of the town. It exploded upon impact and I didn't notice any attempt of pilot bailing out.
