Rapport F/Sgt Helean: - ( I took of from TANGMERE at 1330 hrs on 20 Dec 43 in a Typhoon aircraft. When I went into the dive to drop my bombs my engine gave out, and I had to crash land five miles West of AMIENS, near SAVEUSE (N.W. EUROPE, 1:250,000, Sheet 5, N 05). The Germans troops had seen me coming down, and I was obliged to move very quickly. I was not able to destroy my machine, as I was in a half dazed condition. I ran towards some woods along the river SOMME. After crossing the railroad I approached about five people, but they did not seen very enthusiastic to give me help. While walking along the river I saw a wood-cutter on the other side of the SOMME, who waved to me to keep down. After a while he came over to me, crossing a bridge a little farther down. He conducted me to his house at LA CHAUSSEE TIRANCOURT (N 06). I stayed with him until 24 Dec. He fed me and clothed me. He contacted a man at PICQUIGNY (N 96), who interrogated me to find our if I was English or German. This man took me on 24 Dec on a bicycle to AMIENS-ALLONVILLE (N 16) – ST. GRATIEN - BEAUCOURT - WARLOY (N 27). From WARLOY I was taken by car to VARENNES (N 27). I stayed there from 24 Dec until 2 Aug 44 at a house where I received food and shelter. During the time that I was staying there I helped the F.F.I. to sabotage telephone communications. I met many members of the F.F.I. who on several occasions tried to help me to get out, but each time something seemed to go wrong with the plan. Twice arrangements had been made for me to go to SPAIN, but the guide was caught on each occasion before he had picked me up. I travelled around the countryside fairly easily, as the F.F.I. was very well organised and all evaders were closely protected. I made several efforts to get information back to ENGLAND concerning flying-bomb sites, and other information which I gathered. I do not know if the information get through.Original) - ( PARTIE I - WO 208/5414/2395 - Source : Nat Arch UK - Traduction Ph Laroyenne): J'ai décollé de Tangmere à 13h30 le 20 décembre 1943 à bord d'un Typhoon. Au moment de piquer pour larguer mes bombes, mon moteur a lâché et j'ai dû atterrir en catastrophe à cinq kilomètres à l'ouest d'Amiens, près de Saveuse [80] (N.W. EUROPE, 1/250.000, Feuille 5, ZNG vN0459). Les troupes allemandes m'avaient vu atterrir et j'ai dû me dépêcher. Incapable de détruire mon appareil, j'étais à moitié hébété. J'ai couru vers un bois le long de la Somme. Après avoir traversé la voie ferrée, j'ai croisé environ cinq personnes, mais elles ne semblaient pas très disposées à m'aider. En longeant la rivière, j'ai aperçu un bûcheron sur l'autre rive de la Somme, qui m'a fait signe de rester à terre. Peu après, il m'a rejoint en traversant un pont un peu plus bas. Il m'a conduit chez lui, à La Chaussée Tirancourt (vN0065). Je suis resté chez lui jusqu'au 24 décembre. Il m'a nourri et vêtu. Il contacta un homme à Picquigny (vM9964), qui m'interrogea pour savoir si j'étais anglais ou allemand. Cet homme m'emmena le 24 décembre à vélo jusqu'à Allonville (vN1563), puis Saint-Gratien, Beaucourt et Warloy (vN2770). De Warloy, il me conduisit en voiture à Varennes (vN2874). J'y restai du 24 décembre au 2 août 1944 dans une maison où j'étais nourri et logé. Durant mon séjour, j'aidai les Forces Françaises de l'IntérieurFFI à saboter les communications téléphoniques. J'ai rencontré de nombreux membres des FFI qui, à plusieurs reprises, tentèrent de m'aider à m'évader, mais à chaque fois, quelque chose semblait mal tourner. À deux reprises, des dispositions avaient été prises pour que je parte en Espagne, mais le guide fut arrêté avant de venir me chercher. Je voyageais assez facilement à travers la campagne, car les FFI étaient très bien organisés et tous les évadés étaient étroitement protégés. J'ai fait plusieurs tentatives pour transmettre en Angleterre des informations concernant les sites de bombardements volants, ainsi que d'autres renseignements que j'ai recueillis. J'ignore si ces informations sont parvenues à destination. Rapport F/Sgt Helean: - ( I was contacted by a member of the Resistance group with the intention of making my way back to ENGLAND. This effort also failed. I then made contact with a man in CONTAY (N 26) who tried to get me to SPAIN, again with no success. On 2 Aug 44, I was obliged to move to LEALVILLERS (N 27), because the feeding conditions at VARENNES became very difficult. I stayed in LEALVILLERS until 24 Aug. The Germans occupied the house where I was staying so I had to move very quickly again. I went to another house in the same village, where I remained until 3 Sep, when the British arrived. I stayed for two days and helped the F.F.I. to clean out some of the Germans. I was then taken to PARIS with a member of the French Intelligence. APPENDIX C - M.Marcean Fertel living at La Chaussee, Tirancourt nr Picquiny found and aided me for three days. Has now been taken by the Gestapo. Last heard of in the Amiens prison. The notaire of Picquiny took me by bike to Warlay Baillon where I was aided by a member of the British Intelligence, M. Doctor Beaumont (was captured by Gestapo and killed on 18 Feb). He took me to M.Bouchez Hector of Varennes who hid me for 7 mths. M. Victor Gaumartin arranged for departure in Spain, also M. Duplandre of Albert (caught and killed by Gestapo). M. Victor Caumartin resides at Contay. After the death of M. Beaumont, a M. Hutching, Contay contacted the organisation for me. A doctor of Vadencourt worked also to get me out and also a young priest from Albert. Owing to no food obliged to go to Lealviller where I rested at M.Choquet for 3 weeks. Owing to German S.S. forces in same house obliged to go to M.Gerin also of Lealviller where I was hidden for a week until liberated. Also aided by M. Leech, whereabouts unknown, who took identity discs but that was all he did.Original) - ( PARTIE II): J'ai été contacté par un membre de la Résistance qui souhaitait que je rejoigne l'Angleterre. Cette tentative a également échoué. J'ai alors pris contact avec un homme à Contay (vN2469) qui a essayé de me faire venir en Espagne, là encore sans succès. Le 2 août 1944, j'ai été contraint de me rendre à Lealvillers (vN2675), les conditions de nourriture à Varennes étant devenues très difficiles. Je suis resté à Lealvillers jusqu'au 24 août. Les Allemands ont occupé la maison où je logeais, et j'ai dû déménager précipitamment. Je me suis rendu dans une autre maison du même village, où je suis resté jusqu'au 3 septembre, date de l'arrivée des Britanniques. J'y suis resté deux jours et j'ai aidé les FFI à déloger une partie des Allemands. J'ai ensuite été emmené à Paris avec un agent des services de renseignement français. ANNEXE C - Mr Marceau Fertel, demeurant à La Chaussée-Tirancourt, près de Picquigny, m'a trouvé et aidé pendant trois jours. Il a depuis été arrêté par la Gestapo [Mme Fertel, déportée à Ravensbruck. Retour Avril 45 – Aucune trace de Mr dans les archives allemandes.]. On a de ses nouvelles pour la dernière fois à la prison d'Amiens. Le notaire de Picquiny [Me Collot] m'emmena à vélo à Warloy-Baillon où je fus aidé par un membre des services de renseignement britanniques, le Dr Robert Beaumont (capturé par la Gestapo et tué le 18 février [dans le bombardement de la prison d’Amiens]). Il me conduisit chez Hector Bouchez de Varennes, qui me cacha pendant sept mois. Victor Gaumartin organisa mon départ pour l'Espagne, de même que Deflandre, d'Albert (capturé et tué par la Gestapo [le 22 Juillet 44 – source : Le Maitron]). Victor Gaumartin résidait à Contay. Après la mort de Beaumont, un certain Hutching de Contay contacta l'organisation pour moi. Un médecin de Vadencourt et un jeune prêtre d'Albert œuvrèrent également à mon évasion. Faute de nourriture, je fus contraint de me rendre à Lealviller où je me reposai chez Maurice Choquet pendant trois semaines. La présence de SS allemands dans la même maison m'obligea à aller chez Edgar Gérin, également de Lealvillers, où je fus caché pendant une semaine jusqu'à ma libération. Il a également bénéficié de l'aide de Mr Leech, dont on ignore où il se trouve, qui a pris des disques d'identité, mais c'est tout ce qu'il a fait. |
