Culig, perished in the plane. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC. Both 389th B-24s brought down that day were to bomb sub pens at Royan. There was cloud cover so they circled to make a 2nd run over the target. The 447th BG B-17s were to bomb 20 minutes after the 389th, and so from 6,000 above they dropped fragmentary bombs on the 389th group on its 2nd run. The first B-24 exploded almost immediately. My uncle's plane, Stand-By, was hit in #3 engine, caught fire and started to go down. My uncle was last seen getting ready to exit. His remains were not found in the B-24 wreckage, but in fact were found by French hikers in St. Augustine forest on 12/04/1946. He was interred in France for about 3 years, then returned to Arlington Cemetery. Pilot Ansel successfully parachuted, but drifted into the Ocean and drowned.
