Traduction du rapport du Sgt Harry W Moss - (We took off from SPILSBY at 2130 hrs on 20 Apr to bomb PARIS. Five miles from the target we were attacked by a night fighter at 6500 ft. Our engines were set on fire and the order to bale out was given immediately.
I opened the escape hatch as the aircraft went into a step dive. It started to spin and I was unable to overcome the centrifugal force. I pulled my parachute inside the aircraft and was dragged clear. I hit the ground on the second swing.
I landed in a field in the ST MANDE district of PARIS close by a German anti-aircraft battery. I could hear the soldiers calling to one another, and several flares were fired at the time, but I do not know whether it was because of my presence or whether they were signalling to each other.
I could not hide my parachute, owing to the rustling noise it made on the grass, so I left it where it was and headed S.W at once. I was wearing a civilian leather jacket under my tunic, so I removed my tunic, carrying it under my arm and pulling my trousers over my flying boots.
I reached CHAMPLAN (R 9826) about 0800 hrs (21 Apr) and decided to skirt the village. I was seen, however, by two men, and thought my wiset policy was to declare myself to them, which I did in very poor French. They told me to hide in a haystack, promising to return in two hours' time.
I did not like the look of these men, so I left my hiding place as soon as they had gone and made my way across the fields towards LONGJUMEAU (S 0125). On the way I met a man, and, since there was no one else about at the time, I declared myself to him. He immediately took me to his home at LONGJUMEAU, gave me a meal and put me to bed. From this point my journey was arranged for me.

Traduction du rapport du Sgt Harry W Moss - (My helper at LONGJUMEAU immediately contacted a Belgium who arrived that afternoon (21 May). I showed him my maps and escape kit, which satisfied him that I was genuine. He said that he knew where my aircraft had crashed.
I was given civilian clothes and was made to carry my uniform me, as the Belgian said that, if I were captured without them to prove my identity, I would be shot.
We set out that afternoon fot PALAISEAU (N9627) and caught the Metro to PARIS. I was taken to a cafe, while the Belgian made several phone call. He eventually contacted M. Joseph MAROUQ and I was taken to 2 rue St. Louis, where MAROUQ was working as a caretaker. This man is aged about 45, is fairly short in height, has a small moustache, dark complexion and blue eyes.
He said that he had already sheltered six Americans and he knew that one of then (FELTON-LUKE) had reached the UK. When I left he was expecting for more evaders.
While I was here several members of the organisation called and checked my identity. They said they would send a radio message through to the UK about me.
A few days later Lt Melvin HEINKE, USAAF, was brought in, and he travelled with me throughout the whole of my journey to SPAIN.
On a 2 May HEINKE and I were taken to the station where we joined a party of two Frenchmen and a woman - JEAN (a boy of about 17 years) and Dr Georges SMAGGHE and his wife NICOLLE. We had as our guide a woman called RAGINA (26 years old, dark hair, horn-rimmed glasses, Jewish-looking) who had visited me several times and had provided me with an identity card.
We reached BORDEAUX without incident and took tickets for BAYONNE. It had been arranged with the ticket collector that he would warn us if the Gestapo boarded the train, but nothing happened.
We got off at LABENNE (France, 1:250000, Sheet 344, S9656) just before we reached BAYONNE, and caught the bus into the town. Just before BAYONNE a girl on a bicycle signalled to the driver who stopped the bus and we were told to get out. We learnt afterwards that the Gestapo were checking up on people at the bus station and we had been purposely turned back because of this.
We immediately caught another bus back to CAPBRETON (S 9656), where we stayed with the driver for the night.
The next day (3 May) the firs bus driver called fot us and took us into BAYONNE. We stayed a few hours at his house and were then taken by cattle truck to HASPAREN ( France, 1:25000, Sheet 39, T 0527), where RAGINA left us. From here we went to ITXASSOU (Sheet 34A, S 9622) with two guides. Here we stayed in a barn for the night.
On 5 May we left for the frontier about 2030 hrs. We walked all that night and crossed the frontier about 0500 hrs the next morning. We were taken to a small farm where we rested for a while.
From here the farmer took us to a small inn some distance away. I asked for a telephone and was told that I would find one in a house close by. I was arrested by the carabineros as soon as I entered. We were all marched to ELIZONDO (S 8706) where we were imprisoned for two days in the same cell. At the interrogation I only gave my name, number, and rank.
From here I was taken to PAMPLONA (half a day) - LECUMBERRY (8 days) - PAMPLONA (one night) - ALHAMA (13 days) - and MADRID (3 days). I arrived in GIBRALTAR on 3 Jun.
