Rapport du Capt T W Schwellenbach: - (I was leading a flight of eight A/C on an armed reconnaissance in the area of Mantes-Gassicourt, N-W of Paris on the Seine River. From an altitude of 6,000 feet, Lt Dian, flying White Three position, called for permission to identify a vehicle on a road north of the Seine River. With his wingman, Lt Dian made a pass at this target identifying it as an enemy vehicle; and turning 180 degrees he made a second pass from East to West destroying the vehicle with his machine guns. At this point, I lost sight of Lt Dian; but Lt Keever flying his wing report that Lt Dian broke up and left from his target at which time he was caught in a heavy concentration of light flak from the ground at a point approximately R-5475. Lt Keever then called me on the R/T saying Lt Dian had been hit and that his plane was on fire. Repeated efforts by both Lt Keever and myself to contact Lt Dian on the R/T were unsuccessful. When last seen by Lt Keever, Lt Dian's plane was engulfed by fire at an altitude of approximately 800 feet; and it can be assumed that the A/C and Pilot crashed in the vicinity mentioned above. At the time of crash, Lt Dian's A/C was armed with two 260 pounds fragmentation bombs.
