Extrait de Rapport: - (At about 1930 Captain O'Brien and his flight went down on the deck to attack two trucks. I was leading the second element in Captain Peter's White Flight. I started to follow the other down and heard someone on the R/T say "White Flight stay up and furnish top cover" so I pulled up and circled the area just below the cloud base at about 4000 feet. I watched Captain O'Brien's flight make 3 passes at the trucks and two of them were burning. Then I heard Captain O'Brien say "Coment Red Flight setting a 90° course" I circled the area once moreto survey the damage and noticed another truck about 200 yards ahead of the truck hit that had been unnoticed. I looked around and saw 4 ships heading away from the area and thought it cleared for attack. I pulled off and started at the truck in about a 60° dive from 4,000 feet. As soon as I had it lined in my sight I opened fire, saw strikes on the truck and continued firing and must have been down to 1,500 feet or less when a P-51 flown by Lt Childs passed in front. I immediately quit firing and pulled up, glanced over my shoulder and saw his coolant coming out in a thin stream of white vapor. When I straightened my ship and leveled off I lost sight of him and couldn't find him again. He called Captain O'Brien for a course to the Beachhead and he was told to fly north. Later a voice over the radio said he was bailing out.
