Rapport du Lt Silva: - ( I left Tangmere at 0700 hrs on 24 Aug 44 in a Spitfire IXB. At 0830 hrs I baled out and landed in the centre of a forest. On landing I pulled my parachute free from the trees and hid it along with a harness and mae west in the bushes. I started running for the edge of the wood. I heard Germans approaching so I hid in a ditch. The weather was bad and after a poor search for me they departed. I lay in the ditch until 1300 hrs and then, after cutting my uniform up a bit, I started walking Southeast. I passed a group of Germans on the road and fortunately they didn't recognize me my uniform. At about 1700 hrs I approached a farmer. He offered to dry my clothes and feed and shelter me. My clothes were almost dry when a German staff car approached the house. I managed to escape out of the side door of the house. I roamed about in the rain until 2100 hrs and then approached another farm house, approximately 10 kms from Gournay, about 200 yards to the North of the main Gournay - Rouen road. The farmer hid me in the attic and there I stayed until our forces arrived. |
