Rapport Sgt Renwick: - ( I was a member of a Wellington Mark III aircraft which took off from SEAFORD about 2130 hrs on 9 May 44 on a nickel raid over CHATEAUDUN. Soon after crossing the SEINE engine trouble developed and before reaching our target we turned for home. A little later the pilot gave the order to bale out. I came down somewhere near TRIQUEVILLE (N.W. EUROPE, 1:250,000, Sheet 4, L 70). I hid my parachute in some bushes near a stream and then set off in a South-Easterly direction. I walked till about 0530 hrs (10 May) when I hid in a barn. I remained there all that day and about 2030 hrs I spoke to a woman whom I had noticed several time during the day. She returned later bringing me some food. I started off again about 2200 hrs and reached NASSANDRES (Q 88). about 0500 hrs (11 May). That day I again slept in a barn until nightfall. About 2000 hrs I was given food by a girl to whom I had spoken earlier on. While I was eating in the barn a Frenchman came in and questioned me. He returned later with an English-speaking Frenchman and brought me some food at the same time. Next day (12 May) about 2230 hrs the second Frenchman came to see me and brought me some shoes and an overcoat. He then took me to his house in the village. There he burned my uniform and fitted me up with civilian clothes. I remained with him for about five or six days when I was sent to another house nearby belonging to the Chief of the Resistance. Four or five days later I returned to my first helper's house. About 27 May I was taken by lorry to PONT AUDEMER (Sheet 4, L 70) where I was sheltered until 1 Jun, when I was handed over to the Maquis. At FOURMETOT (L 81) I met my pilot F/Lt. THORN. During the next fourteen days the Maquis were constantly on the move and about 16 Jun the group was split up into small sections. F/Lt. THORN, three members of the U.S.A.A.F. (whose names I do not remember), and I were sent to a farm at LE BEC HELLOUIN (Sheet 7, Q 99). I do not know the names of the people who sheltered us for the next eighteen days. Owing to the activity of the Germans F/Lt. THORN and I were sent to a house at BRIONNE CALLEVILLE (Q 89) in early Jul and remained there for three or four days. We were then taken to MALLEVILLE-SUR-LE-BEC (Q 99) and two or three days later we where sent to a farm near ST. PIERRE DES FLEURS. There we met two members of the U.S.A.A.F. (names not known) and we went thence to La Haye Malherbe (Q 19) where my pilot was sent to one house and I to another. My helpers were sheltering F/Sgt. GAY (S/P.G(-) 2219) who had arrived about a week previously. We were handed over to American troops who entered the village on 23 Aug 44. Je faisais partie de l'équipage d'un Wellington Mark III qui a décollé de Seaford vers 21 h 30 le 9 mai 1944 pour une mission de largage de tracts (Op Nickel) au-dessus de Châteaudun. Peu après avoir franchi la Seine, nous avons rencontré des problèmes de moteur et avons fait demi-tour avant d'atteindre notre objectif. Un peu plus tard, le pilote a donné l'ordre d'évacuer l'appareil en parachute. J'ai atterri près de Triqueville (Feuille 4, ZNG vL7108). J'ai dissimulé mon parachute dans des buissons près d'un ruisseau, puis je me suis dirigé vers le sud-est. J'ai marché jusqu'à environ 5 h 30 (le 10 mai), moment où je me suis caché dans une grange. J'y suis resté toute la journée et, vers 20 h 30, j'ai parlé à une femme que j'avais remarquée à plusieurs reprises au cours de la journée. Elle est revenue plus tard en m'apportant de la nourriture. Je suis reparti vers 22 h 00 et j'ai atteint Nassandres (Feuille 7, Q8981) vers 5 h 00 (le 11 mai). Ce jour-là, j'ai de nouveau dormi dans une grange jusqu'à la tombée de la nuit.
Vers 20 h 00, une jeune fille à qui j'avais parlé plus tôt m'a donné à manger. Alors que je mangeais dans la grange, un Français est entré et m'a interrogé. Il est revenu plus tard accompagné d'un Français parlant anglais et m'a apporté de la nourriture. Le lendemain (12 mai), vers 22 h 30, le second Français est venu me voir et m'a apporté des chaussures ainsi qu'un manteau. Il m'a ensuite emmené chez lui, dans le village. Là, il a brûlé mon uniforme et m'a fourni des vêtements civils. Je suis resté chez lui environ cinq ou six jours avant d'être envoyé dans une autre maison voisine, appartenant au chef de la Résistance. Quatre ou cinq jours plus tard, je suis retourné chez la première personne m'ayant aidé.
Vers le 27 mai, j'ai été conduit en camion à Pont-Audemer (Feuille 4, ZNG vL7609), où j'ai été hébergé jusqu'au 1er juin, date à laquelle j'ai été remis au maquis. À Fourmetot (vL8111), j'ai retrouvé mon pilote, le F/Lt Thorn. Au cours des quatorze jours suivants, le maquis a été constamment en mouvement et, vers le 16 juin, le groupe a été scindé en petites sections. Le F/Lt Thorn, trois membres de l'U.S.A.A.F. (dont j'ai oublié les noms) et moi-même avons été envoyés dans une ferme au Bec-Hellouin (Feuille 7, ZNG vQ9094). J'ignore le nom des personnes qui nous ont hébergés durant les dix-huit jours suivants. En raison de l'activité allemande, le F/Lt Thorn et moi avons été transférés dans une maison à Brionne-Calleville (vQ8990) au début du mois de juillet ; nous y sommes restés trois ou quatre jours.
Nous avons ensuite été conduits à Malleville-sur-le-Bec (vQ9194) puis, deux ou trois jours plus tard, envoyés dans une ferme près de St-Pierre-des-Fleurs (vR0995). Là, nous avons rencontré deux membres de l'U.S.A.A.F. (noms inconnus) avant de nous rendre à La Haye-Malherbe (vR1491), où mon pilote a été hébergé dans une maison et moi dans une autre. Ceux qui nous venaient en aide hébergeaient déjà le F/Sgt Gay S/P.G(-) 2219), arrivé une semaine auparavant. Nous avons été pris en charge par les troupes américaines entrées dans le village le 23 août 1944. Nous avons ensuite été envoyés au quartier général de la 2e Armée, puis à Bayeux, où j'ai été brièvement interrogé.
